How to Get the WhatsApp Green Tick (Verified Badge) in India

By Abhishek Chandra · June 2026 · 6 min read

TL;DR: Getting the coveted Green Tick (Official Business Account) requires a WhatsApp Business API number, 2-factor authentication, and most importantly, significant PR/media coverage proving your brand is "notable." Here's the exact process.

What is the WhatsApp Green Tick?

When you message a customer on WhatsApp using a standard API number, they see your phone number at the top of the chat (unless they save you as a contact). But when you have an Official Business Account (OBA), commonly known as the Green Tick, your business name appears at the top, accompanied by a small green checkmark badge.

The benefits are immense:

Prerequisites for the Green Tick

Before you even apply, ensure you meet Meta's strict requirements. Many businesses apply prematurely and get rejected, which delays the process.

1. You must be on the WhatsApp Business API

You cannot get a Green Tick on the free WhatsApp Business app. You must be using the WhatsApp Business API via a BSP like NitiGrow.

2. Meta Business Verification

Your Meta Business Manager must be verified. This involves submitting your GST certificate, incorporation certificate, or utility bills to prove your business is legally registered in India.

3. Enable Two-Step Verification (2FA)

Your WhatsApp Business API number must have Two-Step Verification enabled in the WhatsApp Manager.

4. The "Notability" Requirement (The Hard Part)

Meta requires your business to be a notable and highly searched brand. This is where most Indian SMBs struggle. Meta verifies notability through organic PR.

How to Apply for the Green Tick

Once you meet the prerequisites, the application process is straightforward:

  1. Log in to your Meta Business Manager.
  2. Navigate to the WhatsApp Manager > Account Tools > Phone Numbers.
  3. Click the settings icon next to your phone number and navigate to Profile.
  4. Click on the Submit Request button next to "Official business account".
  5. Fill out the form. Crucially: Add links to your 3-5 best PR articles. This is your chance to prove notability to the reviewer.
  6. Submit. Meta typically responds within 2-4 business days.

What to do if you get rejected

Rejections are common. If your request is denied, you must wait 30 days before applying again. During this time, focus on improving your notability. Reach out to local business publications or industry blogs to get featured organically.

Remember: You can still use the WhatsApp API and send campaigns effectively without the Green Tick. Focus on delivering a great customer experience while you build your brand's PR footprint.
